Creating the Art
The designer glass used to create these pieces is hand made and hand rolled. I hand-cut the glass and hand assemble the pieces into the design. The glass contains various natural earth elements including gold, copper and iron. I add various effects, such as dichroic glass or etched glass. There are air bubbles and slight variations in the glass making each piece of art unique.
The sheets of glass are first cut and then arranged into the design. I stack them together like a sandwich and melt them flat in a kiln. The glass is fired to temperatures around 1500 degrees F. To give the flat fired pieces shape and a finished feel, I fasten a bail onto the back or wire the piece creating beautiful wearable pieces of art.
Some of my art pieces are created from recycled glass. I use discarded glass from coffee tables, window panes, glass bottles and even marbles to create my art.
I may take the fused piece and put it back into the kiln, for a second firing, at a lower temperature. This creates pieces with more shape and dimension. Sometimes the second firing is to apply enamel or 22K gold designs.
Larger pieces are fired to create beautiful framed glass art. I mount these pieces in shadow boxes to create colorful glass art to hang in your home.
The colorful shiny glass I use is called dichroic glass. Dichroic Glass is a multi layer coating created by melting quartz crystal and metal oxides. These materials are vaporized; using an electron beam the vapor then attaches and condenses onto the surface of the black or clear glass, forming a crystal structure comprised of as many as 30 layers yet the thickness of the total coating is approximately 35 millionths of an inch. The coating created is very similar to a gemstone and by careful control in thickness different colors are obtained. This exciting process creates shimmering surprises for both the artist and the wearer because different light sources create totally different and stunning colors and effects.
These pieces are food safe but should not be used in a microwave or put in a dishwasher. For cleaning, I recommend hand washing using warm soap and water.
